An innovative Royal Borough of Greenwich service helping residents before financial pressures become a crisis has been shortlisted for two national awards.
Greenwich Supports has been named as a finalist in the Excellence in Innovation and Social Inclusion categories at the IRRV Performance Awards, recognising its pioneering approach to helping residents access joined-up support earlier.
Launched in June 2025, the pilot brings together housing, benefits, debt, employment and customer services into one team, making it easier for residents to get the help they need before challenges escalate.
In its first year, the new pilot has:
supported 525 residents in financial difficulty
helped residents secure more than Β£893,000 in additional income
provided advice to help tackle more than Β£1.3 million of debt
prevented homelessness for households at risk
Councillor Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich said:
Greenwich Supports was born from the idea that the right conversation at the right time can change someone's future. We understood that amid the cost of living crisis, our communities needed to know what support was available to them, and that the council as a whole was working to ensure that they weren't left to struggle alone.Β
"The work we're doing with Greenwich Supports might lead parents to discover they are entitled to extra income, give someone the confidence to start a new job, or help families get the advice they need to keep a roof over their heads.
βThis expansion of the scheme that started in 2022 is building on the great work already being done. Working together, our teams take the time to listen; understand what residents are facing and work alongside them to find lasting solutions. This recognition reflects the dedication of our staff and our commitment to helping residents get the right support at the right time.
Councillor Rachel Taggart-Ryan, Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources said:
Too often people only reach out for support when they are already in crisis. This pilot has turned this on its head by identifying residents who may need help and offering joined-up support before problems become overwhelming. Β
βThe results speak for themselves. We've helped residents increase their incomes, manage debt, prevent homelessness and improve their financial security. That's good for the people we support and good for our borough.
The approach has transformed how residents engage with council services. Many of those supported had never previously accessed advice or support. It has also strengthened partnership working, with new referral routes, early support for families and linking with charities to help residents overcome barriers.Β
The IRRV Performance Awards celebrate excellence across local government, recognising organisations that deliver innovative services that improve outcomes for communities.Β
The double shortlisting reflects Royal Greenwichβs commitment to tackling poverty through early intervention, partnership working and focusing on the resident.Β
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in September.Β
